I exist, maybe, just been focused on work and getting back into the writing groove. On that note, TSCOSI week has been going great, there's so much good art and fic. Will share some faves and my own contributions once the week is over.

A Promised Land by Barack Obama

I enjoyed this book, as long as it was and how into the weeds it got. I also just like long biographies filled with details, and this memoir kinda fits that niche. Funny thing though, since the only presidential biographies I've read are about Grant and Washington, and I'm watching The Last Dance documentary at the same time, my biggest not-directly-politics takeaway is "god, why would anyone ever want to be a public figure in modern times". Grant and Washington could fuck off elsewhere sometimes for breaks - not-quite-yet-president-Obama still has press trailing him when he takes a walk in between sitting at his grandma's deathbed.

Air Conditioned Nation, Revisited by Cherian George

A collection of essays on Singapore politics, dating from 2000 to 2017. The author is a journalist-turned-academic, and I liked the even-keeled nature of his essays, being able to see what concerns come to fore in different years. Interesting to see what I do and don't have context for. I started paying attention to politics right in the middle of that date range, after all. Here's a twitter thread of my some favourite snippets.
