December Talking Meme: Day 5
Dec. 5th, 2020 02:03 pmFrom here,
smellslikefudge asked me to talk about sportsball.
Sportsball is good, sportsball is life :P Though seriously, I got to play a lot of different sports growing up, both officially and unofficially, and I really enjoyed it! (I'm not even counting my martial arts experience here, which is a conceptually different category.) I'm not a naturally athletic person at all, so sports and specifically soccer was my first experience with "I think X is really cool, I suck at it, but I keep chugging away at it and I keep getting better every year".
It's funny to me that while I do remember getting my first computer and that mild curiosity, I have no memories of when I started liking soccer, I simply always have. An interest a lot more on the playing side than the watching tbh. From daily pickup games with the neighborhood boys to holiday camps to lasting a year on the U14 team to landing at a school that had a girl's soccer team. Don't get me wrong, I did always watch a number of World Cup games and then 2012 got me interested in the USWNT, but I could never get into keeping track of the EPL or NWSL or whatever.
Not like keeping track of any of that stuff is needed though. I've gotten roped into watching basketball games and that's fun even though I still could not list off the positions, because sometimes it's just cool to watch someone be good at something. I'm so looking forward to the Olympics next year :D
Have some of my arbitrary sportsball opinions to end things off:
Sportsball things that are bullshit
Sportsball things that are very good

Sportsball things that are bullshit
- Headers. Come on, it's not crucial to the game, let's eliminate the brain trauma mechanic
- Arguing with refs, stop it
- Timeouts! What the fuck are timeouts in a game with fixed-time quarters/halves/whatevers! Just play the game!
Sportsball things that are very good
- Goal celebrations
- The moment someone realizes they've broken a record
- People piling on top of each other when they win
- Calling shitty man-marking "social distancing"

Date: 2020-12-05 09:43 pm (UTC)Soccer! The one sportsball I have ever cared about! I played as a kid, but didn't keep up with it once I aged out of youth sports-for-fun leagues. :) I'm glad you had the experience of keeping at it and improving!
