In no particular order,
smellslikefudge asked me to talk about Chicago Sky's epic semifinals choke.Running a little behind because I fell headlong into a small side-project, will be playing catch-up for a bit. For today, flowersforgraves ask me "your favorite and least favorite books you read this year (of any genre)?"
I'm at 42 books so far, but there was nothing I was super duper enthusiastic about or that I really really hated. Unlike last year, where I very much occupied both extremes.
My highlights would be:
The closest to a lowlight is The Black Tides Of Heaven by Neon Yang, where the story felt too sparse for me to get invested in anyone, really.
I don't think I have any least favorites here - some of these books were much drier than others, but I knew that going in and I really doubt I was the intended audience for those. So instead I'll arbitrarily share the books that fell into the fun category of "Meant for a general audience; was packed with pretty pictures or diagrams that made thumbing through a physical copy very worth it".

I said I wouldn’t consider all the new-to-me albums of the year, but I since learned that I could a download from Spotify a JSON of all the tracks I’ve listened to this past year. Wrangled that into album form and added the stuff I listened to elsewhere, and now I have a spreadsheet that tells me I’ve listened to at least 35 new-to-me albums this year. :O

Okay time to rank TSwift albums. Spotify Wrapped already had Swift as my top artist because of the trivia preparation + Folklore looping, the listening I had to do for this has cemented that further.

I went to two concerts this year, and both were awesome. I always enjoy simply existing in a large (gay) crowd that’s having a good time, and well, it’d been a while.

This concert opened with a gigantic moon projection talking to the audience and closed with a principal dancer of the American Ballet Theatre pirouetting during Cut To The Feeling. From start to finish, CRJ maintained the unhinged pop vibes in the best way.
Favorites bits of CRJ commentary:
My row was basically a bunch of gay dudes partying their hearts out and me, so again, great vibes. Concert was long enough that I appreciated being able to sit down in a seat for a few songs that were slower or I didn’t know well.
Only regrets are (1) I should have operated on concert timing and arrived late, not early, because I ended up not caring for the opener (2) I could have gotten a ticket earlier to get nicer seats, instead of buying a ticket on impulse a week before.

Rooftop venue! The nighttime view of the East River and the Brooklyn Bridge was beautiful.
Unlike the CRJ one, this concert happened after the release of their new album Crybaby, and so featured a bunch of songs from it. It sold me a lot more on the album than my first few listens did. (Not to spoil a later entry for this month or anything.) Of course the twin banter was great, as it had been when I saw them in LA for The Con X tour. I liked this opener decently from what very little I heard, even if I cringed at the fact that the first thing I heard upon entering the venue was her asking the audience to raise their hand if they were a certain star sign.
Will end today’s entry with a PSA for concert earplugs: they’re good for you! :P And the sidenote that I'm sorry if I miss any requests for December talking between the current dates so far - I'm only logging into social media this month to post responses to prompts so I may miss any late requests and push them to later dates as I notice them.
That time of year again, was reminded of it by flowersforgraves's own post about this. Give me a day in December (1-31) and a topic, and I'll write something in response. Almost anything (fannish or otherwise) goes - ficlet prompts, media opinions, recs, random questions, etc. List of media I consumed in 2022 if you'd like.

tfw the first year you watch the WNBA also being the year your team wins the whole damn thing, despite the odds :D I dunno, I don't have much to say other than it's been a real pleasure watching the Sky play, despite my minimal knowledge of basketball tactics, and that they're a team that's very easy to root for both on and off the court. (Even if watching a cold streak of three attempts hurts, it is paid back by some unbelievable threes and drives.)
Looking forward to watching >1 game in-person next year, and hoping that certain players don't retire/move/etc. One more time!

because that one doc still cracks me up, let's talk about endianness.
Let's say we're storing a 32-bit integer in a computer. It'll get stored as four 8-bit bytes, each with its own address in memory. Endianness is whether it's the most significant byte (big endian) or the least (little endian) significant byte stored at the smallest memory address. These images from Wikipedia probably illustrate it best:
As you can imagine, this decision doesn't matter within the same computer since it's going to be using that one format for reading or writing. Matters when transmitting, but there are defaults and ways of specifying formats, and so on. Honestly, I hadn't really thought about it since covering the topic in systems stuff, this literally never comes up in my day-to-day.
Then I read Gulliver's Travels for the first time this year. And get to the whole egg dispute between the little-endians and big-endians and go haha what a coincidence, and go wait, that's too convenient.
Because the byte-storage format was indeed named after the egg dispute in this note written in 1980, with a title of ON HOLY WARS AND A PLEA FOR PEACE and an appropriately dramatic first sentence of "This is an attempt to stop a war. I hope it is not too late and that somehow, magically perhaps, peace will prevail again."
I also enjoy that at the end of this note, Cohen points out that byte-storage endianness is orthogonal to egg-cracking endianness. Everyone can crack eggs their own preferred way, but Cohen thinks people ought to pick the same single format for their data. (Am now imagining an argument that the actual disagreements Swift were satiring are closer to bytes than eggs, pfft).
