Will wonders never cease, I actually consumed a non-book new-to-me thing this month.

We Are Lady Parts

A six-episode TV show about a British punk rock band of Muslim women in their late twenties. Super fun, great characters, and because I am incredibly predictable, my favourites are Amina, the microbiology PhD student with performance anxiety who gets recruited to be the band's lead guitarist, and Saira, the band's abrasive frontwoman who's nevertheless convinced Amina's the key to their success. Amina's parents are also delightful. Would recommend! (Probably will request it for Yuletide this year, if I do Yuletide)

Mass Effect 2

Finished the replay, suicide mission and all those DLC. Usual shitposting here.

Vox article about the Isabel Fall sitch - Decent piece, but I feel like there's a little too much blame allocated to Twitter The Website alone. Finished watching The Last Dance, which was a great documentary about Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls - I knew basically nothing about MJ other than Space Jam going in, and the documentary was pretty good at setting context.

My Jedi Academy save crapped out on me and instead of loading from an earlier save, I took this as a sign that I should playing this 2003 game. I am now 8.5 hours into Disco Elysium with minimal prior knowledge and an uncharacteristic refusal to look things up. The latter is getting bolstered by an increasingly strong feeling that there isn't going to be a "good" ending anyway, so I can just be the shitter I'm destined to be, dodging political questions and staring at footprints.

The Adventure Zone: Balance

I finally finished it, only took me like three years. My final verdict is Taako ≈ Merle >>> Magnus. This podcast's goof/seriousness ratio and transitions between the two meant that it was very difficult to take any of Magnus's apparently earnest heroics seriously, but I could buy Taako's selfish focus on himself and his people and Merle's half-hearted gestures towards doing good. Also, because I am that dweeb who hates when athletes argue with referees, I additionally hate it when there's incredibly obvious dice lying and the reddit graphs back up that observation.

Writing

I wrote a couple of fics for Starship Iris week, one for Violet and one for Park. I'm enjoying S2 so far, and posting reactions on Tumblr. I do mourn the loss of timeline consistency, statements about Juniper Liu's age have thrown a wrench into things.

Recs

There has been so much good Starship Iris art lately! A few favourites below.

Stressed undergrad Violet

Sana playing guitar on the hammock

From here, [personal profile] glassesofjustice asked me to talk about my favourite character from Starship Iris.

Man, TSCOSI is one of those canons where the distance between my faves is pretty small. I love pretty much everyone in this bar, including the baddies. But you know, I am incredibly predictable, and so while Violet and Sana continually vie for second place, Arkady Patel is 100% my favourite character on the show.

Midnight Radio

This podcast was a sweet, slow listen of a love story, that was also about loving and hating your hometown and what it means to leave it, or to come back. Sybil the radio announcer has a lovely voice, which is good, because we mostly hear her. Do wish we got to hear Amelia, as much as ambiguity might have been the point.

Fanwork Recs

(Critical Role) This person's songs for each of the Nein are so, so good. Perfect understanding of the characters displayed in both the lyrics and music. Particular favorites are Fjord's, Beau's and Jester's.

(Starship Iris) All The Numbers Between Zero And One by [archiveofourown.org profile] vachtar - F!Park & McCabe going on a stakeout, a great gift fic I received in the Rule 63 Exchange.

Writing

Wrote a couple of Critical Role fics, including one for the aforementioned R63 Exchange.

a question, not an answer (Beau/F!Caleb) - Caleb is a woman. That makes things go a little different with Beauregard.

Fragile Opening (Beau/Yasha) - After the battle with Vokodo, Yasha asks an unexpected question of Beau.

(I continue to be unimpressed with the wanky parts of CritRole fandom, because I managed to get rude comments on the most default type of genderswap fic. Giant fandoms, sigh.)

Understanding Pac-Man Ghost Behavior

The key to understanding ghost behavior is the concept of a target tile. The large majority of the time, each ghost has a specific tile that it is trying to reach, and its behavior revolves around trying to get to that tile from its current one. All of the ghosts use identical methods to travel towards their targets, but the different ghost personalities come about due to the individual way each ghost has of selecting its target tile.

According to the first vignette, it was Violet's birthday on Wednesday, so I ended up using that as an arbitrary deadline by which to post the whumpy vampires and werewolves AU that had been rolling around in my head.

Happy 2019!

Dealing with a very minor cough over the past week which was annoying for my birthday and the new year, but will definitely take this over the utterly debilitating sore throat I had for the week before my week in California. (Speaking of which, I love NYC but I miss in-n-out so much y'all. No, I don't want to taste how meaty the patty is, please drench it in delicious delicious sauce.)

Summary: The room is tiny but it’s theirs, and that’s all that matters. There are two twin beds on either side of the room with dressers built into the walls beside matching closet doors on either side of the entrance. Two desks sit at the ends of the beds. Thoughts: I love reading about these two getting closer in college and the very natural way that the team assumes that they're already dating. Sometimes all you want is fluffy f/f getting together for the holidays, and this fic delivered. :D

I have a list of Yuletide recs over at my tumblr here, and hoping to eventually post more because I do have more. (Ocean's 8 had like...20 fics so I still got more to read.)

I ended up writing two fics for The Strange Case of Starship Iris, because I really can't tell when my little obsession with this podcast is going to stop (or if it will).

Agent Park is 35 years old when he gets transferred to Project Sentinel.

It irks him. His work had become as natural to him as a well-practiced dance - he knew all the steps, and how to best maintain the appearance of following the Republic’s lead.

This assignment is nothing more than a painted target on his back. Not an opportunity to rise, like some of the other chosen idiots seem to think, but rather a clear marking of who will take the blame if all of this fails.

Man, was she glad to be back on base. Shitty that it was because they’d lost Solano and Andrews. It was hitting the new kids hard. They’d get used to it. She had more important things on her mind, like taking advantage of the shitty connection here to see who was still alive.

She was running through people to contact in her head when Lieutenant Jackson’s hand landed on her shoulder. “Soldier. My quarters, immediately.”

Violet stared at the terminal in frustration. Of course, this city just had to have it’s own breed of terminal technology too, rendering the interface incomprehensible to her despite all the words technically being in English.

She stepped back, gesturing for her new companion to figure this out.

Juno wrinkled his nose, the scar across it twisting as he did so. “What, me?”

As the bandits dove out of the woods, Krejjh cracked their knuckles. Been a while since they’d gotten to enjoy a good fight. Not that these guys would be that much fun to deal with, they seemed disappointingly run-of-the-mill. Not even a spell-caster among them, or at least one uninterested in putting on a show.

Krejjh kept their back against the edge of the wagon, Translator Jeeter’s back pressing back from within it. They could feel the movement of Translator Jeeter rapidly opening his spellbook, probably looking for something awesomely helpful. Not real likely, given he just started.

That was okay. Better than okay, it was great, because it meant the three of them would handle it without Translator Jeeter or their new friend getting involved at all.

Krejjh surveyed the bandits surrounding them. Most of them had stopped in their tracks at the sight of Krejjh. Not every day they saw a drow. Krejjh’s scimitar popped into existence in their right hand with a faint purple glow as they screeched a terrible noise. Man, would their throat hurt later, but Lieutenant Patel had been right about the idea. Couple of the bandits threw down their weapons and started running away. People believed the weirdest shit about drow.

2191

It’s Brian’s fault.

He’s the one who started telling Krejjh about drinking games, who had found it fascinating because apparently Dwarnian drinking practices are very different from those of humans. Because of course they are.

That means the next time Sana breaks out the moonshine, Krejjh insists they all play “Hot Seat” or something, which Arkady determines is possibly the stupidest drinking game in existence after they explain it to her. Is this what college kids did for fun, ask each other questions and drink to not answer instead of just…drinking? Weird.

Arkady stops herself from saying so, leans a little into Violet sitting next to her and occupies herself with a sip of moonshine. Violet looks at her, amusement clear on her face. “You think this game’s pretty stupid.”

Violet keeps her voice low enough that the others, busying themselves with arguing over who goes first, don’t pay them any attention. Arkady made a face. “At this point, what don’t we all know about each other? I give it two rounds before Krejjh gets bored.” Read more... )

The hit sent Arkady tumbling to the ground. She shifted her weight in a well-practiced movement, rolling her back across the ground to land in a half-kneeling position. Stake was still in her hand, thankfully.

Arkady looked up at her cloaked opponent. They were looming over her, a predatory grin slowly widening on their face. Not a vampire in a blood frenzy. She didn’t recognize them but that didn’t mean anything, not with the intel she’d gathered on the clan’s ranks growing.

Shit, she wasn’t dying alone in the woods to some newbie vampire. They weren’t lunging for the kill yet though, content to stare silently and watch what she would do. Probably liked to play with their food.

She watched as the kid went through the datapad - it had their ID details, cover stories, all of it. Irritation on the kid’s face grew with every flick of her thumb. That was concerning. The kid knew better than her who they were dealing with.

“Padawan Patel sounds stupid as shit. You couldn’t find me a better last name?” The kid tossed the datapad back to her.

Promising. If that was the only thing the kid could think of, maybe they had a chance. “Believe me. I’m not going to enjoy being called Master Tripathi.”

Violet watches the woman die.

She can’t make herself move, or look away, and she doesn’t know if it’s some kind of perverse need to look at what she’s done or simply the shock setting in. Probably both. She knows better than most people, how fragile the human body is, how easily flesh rips apart, bones break, organs fail. Causing it herself is an entirely different sort of knowledge.

A hand falls on her shoulder and Violet’s jolted out of her thoughts. She’s not alone in the alley anymore. She jerks away, skidding along the brick wall she’s been sitting against. God, she should’ve left quicker.

The hand doesn’t try to hold on. “Violet, it’s only me.”

Arkady keeps her gun trained on him. His ankles and wrists are bound, but a man with a claim like his? She’s not in the mood to take chances.

The evidence is in his favor, though. It’s the same damn face. The extra decade on it makes the crew cut fit him perfectly, the same way the mop of messy hair in the present does. Blue hoodie is replaced with a sleek black jacket, an empty holster peeking out under it.

He rubs his jaw ruefully. “I should have known better than to try and get past security you built, huh Kady?”
